Monkaaba was founded in 2020 by Esnaider Ortega Gómez and Didier Ortega, with a focus on transparency, fairness, and producer-led coffee production. In collaboration with Semilla, they built a model centered on quality and direct support at origin.

Based in San Agustín, Huila, Monkaaba started with six families and has grown to around 80 producers. The project is built on strong community values, long-term relationships, and shared development across the supply chain.

Monkaaba is fully producer-led, with farmers involved in every stage from farm to export. Coffee is cupped blind with feedback shared directly, helping improve quality while keeping the system transparent and accessible.

Hermanos Burbano

The Burbano brothers have all been members of Monkaaba for many years. Jose, Miguel and Jesus grew up in a coffee family, and have always had the interests of coffee communities at heart. The relationships that Jose, Miguel and Jesus have grown through their work with Monkaaba have led to a greater focus on quality; they are able to reap the rewards for their hard work more directly, and communicate their top quality offering to the right clients. This led to the purchase of a new shared plot, at nearly 2000 masl in the mountains above San Agustin.

Washed Geisha

Together, the brothers have aimed for top end quality, planting Geisha, Chiroso, Laurina and Pacamara. This lot is an excellent illustration of their years of work in coffee, and of the focus on quality that their close relationships have allowed. A perfumed, sweet and balanced washed Geisha, we find aromas of jasmine, followed by soft, ripe peach and a round oolong finish.

All La Cabra coffees are roasted for both filter and espresso.
