Shyira’s remote location also means it is the smallest station; a big driver in the decision to build here was the greater impact that Muraho could have on the very rural population. Here, their genuine drive for social change led to a focus on access to speciality coffee knowledge, and importantly pricing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOver the past couple of harvests, Shyira has consistently produced our favourite lots out of Rwanda. The weather conditions here are perfect for both production and processing, the volcanic soils are healthy, and of course the high altitude leads to slow maturing, sugar-rich cherries. These conditions gave rise to the idea of testing different varietals here, a study in the effect of Rwandan terroir on well-known and characterful varietals from elsewhere in the coffee belt. He was one of the first to grow coffee in the area, and one of the few that stayed during El Salvador’s brutal civil war, as many others abandoned their land, sold cheap and fled into neighbouring Honduras. As El Salvador began to settle again after the war, the Riveras bought the land that would become Finca Santa Rosa, and began to grow timber, due to government subsidies aiming to help the post-war rebuilding effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2003, the Cup of Excellence came to El Salvador, a great showcase for the first few speciality coffee producers in the country. The Riveras saw a prime opportunity; if they could use the perfect conditions at Santa Rosa to produce micro-lots of high enough quality, they could fetch high prices at the Cup of Excellence auctions, making their farm highly profitable. Parainema is a native Honduran varietal, created in response to a nematode outbreak in the mid 80’s. The Honduran Coffee Institute carefully selected Parainema from hybrid strains, looking for nematode resistance while maintaining positive attributes in the cup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lot was processed using a washed method; de-pulped, fermented for 20 hours and washed carefully, before 14 days of drying on raised beds underneath plastic solar drying tunnels. Through it all the Carlson family have managed to establish themselves as producers and exporters of consistently delicious coffees, all the while providing some semblance of stability to the lives of smallholder farmers that surround their washing stations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMutana\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hills of Mutana are a never-ending tapestry of green, possessing breathtaking panoramic views. The edge of the Kibira Forest is only a couple of kilometers away, allowing cool mists to fall onto farmers’ fields daily, slowing cherry maturation. The fertile sandy soils of Mutana seem to grow everything; nitrogen-fixing peas and beans, passion fruit and tea are all grown alongside coffee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCoffee farmers from the Mutana hill deliver to Long Miles’ Heza station. Heza sits at 1960 masl, so harvest normally starts around two weeks later here than at the lower altitude Bukeye station. Heza was built in January 2014, and now serves nearly 2,000 individual farmers.
